Hedwig’s Hundred Household Helpers – Little everyday Lifesavers

So here is a small list of everyday minor injuries or awkward situations and what to do with your limited means until professional help arrives and takes over:

  1. bee sting:  immediately apply alcohol (4711 if need be) or a raw onion or a thick mud pack and call 110 against an allergic reaction
  2. minor injury : apply a splint and a bandage and put up to rest, if it is a sprained ankle or the like, aloe won’t do any harm
  3. minor scratch or bruise:  wash off well or dab after bleeding; apply a thick dab of ointment (like Bepanthen or an aloe branch – get your own plant, t’s worth the trouble) and a supple bandage to the scraped spot
  4. 20180723_065804.jpgmosquito bite: scratch the itching surface and apply saliva or mud or a raw onion or at best, a mosquito bite stick (there are new models that heat up the area and cause itching to disappear)
  5. If you are headachy and happen to be near a willow tree, how lucky! Just peel down some young leaves and chew them, they are full of a precursor of acetylsalicylic acid, aka ASA. (gosh, these alliterations)   In 1897, scientists at the Bayer company began studying acetylsalicylic acid as a less-irritating replacement medication for common salicylate medicines.[9][8]:69–75 By 1899, Bayer had named it “Aspirin” and sold it around the world. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AspirinDon’t forget to drink at least 2 – 3 liters of water or tea, put up your feet and relax in a cool dark room.
  6. Don’t have time to peel vegetables later on? Peel them now, wrap in a moist cloth and tuck them away in the veggie compartment of your fridge. They will keep for several hours.
  7. Your key doesn’t turn well? A bit of candle wax will help, or vaseline.
  8. You need something refreshing? A glassful of Coke watered down and with lots of lemon juice is fine, and less aggressive than pure Coke on your teeth and tummy. I have plastic fruit with some fluid inside that act as ice cubes without watering my drink more than I’d like to.
  9. It is getting hot in your rooms? make sure the windows are shuttered at the top and let in some fresh air farther down, close your blinds all the way on the sunny side, turn on a ventilator. Wear light linen or thin cotton in light colors and avoid getting too much sun. Today’s radio report talked about more than 120%  increase in skin cancer, white and black types, in Bavaria alone. (They also mentioned that the Bayern don’t go higher than a Bayer, nor than a Du-baier, they eat too much and drink even more than they ought to.
  10. Your plants are looking kinda sad and hangin’ down? Don’t worry,  the impatiens and primulas and  even basilic can be carefully watered back to life if it was only a day or two without. Just don’t overdo it; I always poke a finger in the pot to see whether the roots are moist yet not too wet or even drowned, nobody wants to have their feet wet for longer! One quick method: plungs the whole plant into a bucket, wait a moment for it to soak up what it needs, then put it back into the sun or favorite spot.
  11. Life is dull? Try Schiffe versenken with a grid 4 by 4(a boat of 4, 2 of 3, 2 of 2 and 3 of 1 each) .  Or have a game of Stop!  with 4 to 6 scattergories against each other. Fun, quick to note down and it makes you concentrated again. They are fine for 20 minute breaks. (ndlr: my games book en español will be out by 2019).
